Russian
Holidays and Special Occasions (in
order of importance)
The
Lady's Birthday
Appropriate
gift: Flowers and a card are a must, optional: teddy bear,
chocolates.
All
women receive flowers on this day. Forgetting to send a
lady a card, or a gift on this day would be equal to
forgetting her birthday. 5-7 roses and a nice
greeting card are a must, optional: teddy bear,
chocolates.
Valentine's
Day
Russians
only started celebrating Valentine's Day 3-4 years ago, so
it is not a very well known holiday in smaller cities. Appropriate
gift: roses, chocolates, teddy bear and a card
January
1
New Year
More
important holiday then Christmas, which was banned as a
holiday till 1991. Russian New Years' Day is celebrated the same as Christmas in
America. Presents are given, families come together,
Grandfather Frost (Santa Claus) leaves the presents for
the children. Appropriate gift: champagne, teddy bear,
fruit, chocolates. Flowers are optional.
January
7, Christmas
Celebrated
on January 7, Christmas was banned as a holiday during the
Soviet regime, so not many Russians remember it. The
tradition is slowly coming back though. Appropriate
gift:
champagne, teddy bear, fruit, chocolates. Flowers are
optional.
